WTF!!!!! Is going on......
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
The Chicago Bears will win the NFC North for the 2010 season.
I'm finished listening to concerns about our apparently weak wide receiver group, when it's actually going to be a strength. I'm finished listening to people talk about how Martz is going to be the death of the tight end position with the Bears, because it won't be. Above all else I'm absolutely finished listening to people say that if Brut Favray rises from the grave, like an Altered Beast with a surgically repaired ankle, that the Minnesota Vikings are going to be the hands down favorite to take the division.
I'm going to step out on a limb for not only what I believe as fact, but to specifically be the contrarian when it comes to those already spelling out the Bears demise even before the first second of the first preseason game ticks off the clock.
The Chicago Bears are going to win the NFC North in 2010.
Reason #1: The Chicago Bears are going to have at least four, and as many as six, players with 50 receptions, 700 yards, and 5 TD or more.
Not one, not two, not three, but at least four different players are going to come in with these numbers, and I would not be surprised to see this number end up being as high as six.
Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Greg Olsen, Matt Forte: they are all capable of hitting that mark. Just adding these predicted numbers up you'd be looking at somewhere around 4200 yds and 30 TD which of course would be a return to a pro-bowl level for Jay Cutler.
Reason #2: The Chicago Bears defense is going to take a huge step back to glory in 2010 combining for at least 40 SCK, 25 INT, and 20 FF.
If there is one thing the Chicago Bears always do well it's force fumbles, even in what was an injury plagued year our beloved Bears still led the league in forced fumbles, and with the addition of the returning machine known as Chris Harris it's extremely likely that this trend continues.
As far as the rest, pressure leads to sacks, and fear of sacks leads to forced throws, and forced throws lead to interceptions. The addition of Julius Peppers on the defensive line will make everyone better just by the focus that is going to be placed on him by the opposing lineman. That combined with giving Mark Anderson someone to learn a bit from, and getting Izzy back on the line should be huge. If Peppers lights a fire under Tommie then there isn't a QB in the league that will be safe this year.
Reason #3: Dave Toub and his unit of special teams ninja are without a doubt one of the best in the league.
It really doesn't seem to matter when it comes to Toub, you can literally give him almost anyone and he can turn them into a special teams stud given a year to mold them as he sees fit. You add his general prowess with a couple of all-around studs like Tim Shaw and you've got a group that should continue to be one of the best in the league.
We've got more quality return men than most teams can imagine, and a kicker that is about as automatic as one can be from 50 yards and under in Robbie Gould. Brad Maynard is still holding down punting duties, and there are very few guys I'd rather have launching the ball than him when it's needed. Not to mention, despite his miscue last season, I doubt there is another long snapper in the league whose name is known as far and wide as Patrick Mannelly.
---
So there are three of my reasons why the Bears are going to win the NFC North crown next year, what are some of yours?

Rogers Cornholes Kornheiser
Aaron Rodgers calls Tony Kornheiser "stupid," "dumb" and "terrible"
It would be an extreme understatement to say that Rodgers came away unimpressed.
In an interview with ESPN Radio in Milwaukee, Rodgers went off on Kornheiser and said he was embarrassingly unprepared for his job.
"You know who was better than Tony Kornheiser? Dennis Miller was ten times better," Rodgers said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. "Dennis Miller was a great comedian, but one of the worst Monday Night Football guys ever. And he was ten times better than Tony Kornheiser. His stuff was actually funny. Tony wasn't funny at all. He did absolutely no research. We'd sit in those production meetings and he would add absolutely nothing to the conversation. I'd be like, 'What are we doing here? This is stupid.'"
Rodgers praised Monday Night Football play-by-play man Mike Tirico as coming into production meetings thoroughly prepared. Kornheiser? Not so much.
"You get in there with Tony and he's asking you all these dumb questions that have no application to the game you are playing or anything you are doing," Rodgers said. "He's terrible. . . . I don't think he's funny. I don't think he's insightful. I don't think knows, really, anything about sports."
Most football fans regard Ron Jaworski as one of the top analysts in the business, but Rodgers isn't particularly thrilled with Jaworski, either.
"I like him, but, when I was coming out, he did the worst segment in the history of TV about me talking about my fundamentals," Rodgers said of Jaworski. "It was not even close to anywhere near my fundamentals. The first time I met him, someone introduced me to him and I said, 'Yeah I know him. He's the guy who ripped me before the draft.' The rest of the night he told me how great I was. I was like, 'I know your song and dance.' And now he loves me."
The whole interview, in which Rodgers criticized other ESPN employees and took a shot at the Detroit Lions, is well worth listening to. Rodgers comes across as an entertaining and engaging player who's not afraid to speak his mind. When he retires, he'd be perfect for the Monday Night Football booth. Or as co-host ofPardon the Interruption.
Then There Were 12!!!!
Remember, we can bring in new teams, but keep in mind that we need to bring them in 2 at a time to keep the divisions even!

Deep Sleepers — Quarterbacks
If you go to Dictionary.com, the definition is as follows:
“Something or someone that becomes unexpectedly successful or important after a period of being unnoticed, ignored or considered unpromising or a failure.”
It’s so funny to see what other fantasy sites’ definitions of a “sleeper” is, when in reality it’s right here under our nose. For purposes of OUR fantasy football website, it’s basically a player who completely exceeds expectations from pre-season ADP (average draft position). Remember, we have MILLIONS of people playing our beloved hobby, and because of our ADP Tool at FantasyFootball.com, we have a general idea of where players are being drafted.
So, in order to accurately derive a useful “Sleeper” list, you take the average draft position of a certain player and you subtract that from where you actually believe that player should be drafted. And… walaa!!! If that number is off by 12-24 picks you have yourself a solid sleeper. If that number is off by more than 24 picks you have a deep sleeper… and that’s what I’m offering you today.
DEEP SLEEPERS!!
A look at some players I believe will have a lot more value than their early-season ADP might indicate.
QUARTERBACKS I LIKE
1. Chad Henne, Miami Dolphins — This one is tough for me to talk about because he’s a former Michigan Wolverine and it’s nearly impossible to say anything good about a “little rodent”. But it’s hard to ignore the number of QBs that school up north has placed in the NFL. Tom Brady and Brian Griese come to mind… but there are others. Henne is in the long line of former Michigan QBs who might be able to have a successful NFL career.
It appears that Bill Parcells is doing everything he can to surround his franchise QB with talent, too, starting with talented offensive linemen. Henne also has two very capable RBs in Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown, and if that wasn’t enough… they made a deal to bring Brandon Marshall into the fold. Like him or not, Marshall is a stud WR capable of catching 100+ passes per season while taking the pressure off Davone Bess and Brian Hartline.
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not expecting Henne to finish in the top 5 at the end of the year in this type of offense, but considering his ADP has him going in the middle of the 12th round (138.45 overall), I think there’s some tremendous value attached to this third-year QB. I have Henne projected for 3,375 yards and 20 TDs, which could still be a conservative figure considering the upgrades they have made on offense. If you are fortunate enough to get Henne in the 12th round, count your blessings.
2. Kevin Kolb, Philadelphia Eagles — It’s always tough to project how a QB is going to perform in the NFL when he comes from a pass-happy college system. I mean, think about it… how many Texas Tech or Houston QBs have really panned out into NFL caliber QBs? But don’t paint all former college QBs from these schools (and others like them) into a corner because it’s really not fair.
Sometimes QBs from small schools or schools that don’t necessarily meet NFL-offensive standards turn out to be very good signal-callers at the next level. You simply can’t stereotype guys based solely on where they played unless you look at each players’ mechanics and throwing motion, not to mention whether or not they have a solid QB coach helping them along to get to the point they need to be.
Kolb showed signs of brilliance last year when he filled in for the injured Donovan McNabb, starting two games in the middle of the season. In those two games Kolb completed 65% of his passes for 718 yards and 4 touchdowns. Granted, they were playing behind much of the New Orleans game and were forced to throw on nearly every down in the second half, but I still really liked what I saw from Kolb… and it’s not like he’s unfamiliar with this offense.
Kolb has a tremendous talent pool to work with, including speedy receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, not to mention TE Brent Celek. Considering the offensive line has upgraded and I’m still not sold on the defense, Kolb should get plenty of chances to sling the rock around several times per game.
3. Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Admittedly, he’s more of a deep sleeper in larger leagues and/or dynasty leagues, but I still think he has some value in normal, 12-team re-drafters. Because the Bucs were so bad last year, many have overlooked the second-year QB from Kansas State… but I think that might be a mistake. Freeman may not end the season as a QB1 in the top 12, but he could surprise a few naysayers by finishing somewhere in the top 19 or 20.
Consider this… Josh Freeman’s ADP is actually larger (meaning he’s being drafted later) than Josh Johnson’s. Yes, I realize it’s early and that will eventually turn around… but even when it does, Freeman won’t be any higher than a 20th-round pick in deeper leagues. To me, that’s tremendous value.
Keep in mind, leagues that penalize for INTs will be tougher for me to justify him as a sleeper because he takes a ton of chances and will most likely end the season with close to 20 INTs… if not more. But what I like about Freeman is the fact he’s got two very talented rookie receivers to gel with, a stud TE who’s just screamin’ for more touches in 2010, and an offensive line that is getting better (though it’s not great yet).
I fully expect the defense to be a “work in progress” which means the offense should have plenty of opportunities to play “catch up” throughout the course of most games. If I could land Freeman in the 18th round, I’d be completely content.

3rd Year Breakout Wide Receiver
1. Early Doucet, WR, Arizona Cardinals - Doucet should move up to the #3 spot behind Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston. Early season projections have the Cardinals not running nearly as many pass plays and running the ball a bit more with Chris Wells. I still think the Cardinals will be more of a passing team. He opened up the eyes of the Cardinals brass by posting 2 huge games in the playoffs, which is hoping to be a sign of things to come. I believe he’s ready to emerge from the depth chart and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him snag 50 receptions this season.
2. Pierre Garcon, WR, Indianapolis Colts – Garcon showed numerous signs of breakout last year. He stepped in for an injured Anthony Gonzalez and became a reliable target for Peyton Manning to go along with Reggie Wayne and Company. Don’t let the frenchy-french name fool you…the guy’s tough and can play. His target numbers were big as he had only two games where he had less than 4 targets. I don’t count week 17 where all of the starters rested. But, he had 10 targets in the Divisional Playoff, 15 in the Conference Title and 7 in the Super Bowl. I believe even with Gonzalez back and Austin Collie still in the mix, Garcon is the one that should still see the majority of the playing time and targets opposite Wayne. I’m projecting about 65 receptions for him this season and he should be drafted as a WR3 but has WR2 upside.
3. Devin Thomas, WR, Washington - He could be the one that benefits most with Donovan McNabb heading into the beltway. McNabb has only one true WR to throw to and that’s Santana Moss but, he’s been on the downside for a few seasons now. Devin Thomas has stated that he’s matured and ready to play and his type of game could fit in with Donovan McNabb’s abilities. Thomas was a starter from week 6 on in 2009, which included a huge game in week 13 which he posted 7 catches for 100 yards and 2 scores (which made up 2/3 of his total). With Mike Shanahan in town running a west coast offense, he could turn out to be a DeSean Jackson type WR with this abilities. Don’t draft him like DeSean Jackson but, is worth a late round flier with his deep route abilities and upside.
4. Chaz Schilens, WR, Oakland Raiders – The Jason Campbell trade has opened things up in Oakland as they finally have someone that can actually read a playbook and throw the ball, relatively, accurately. Well, compared to JaMarcus Russell, Campbell hits bullseyes every time. The offseason foot surgery is a bit concerning but, if he’s healthy and can stay healthy, he should be a huge sleeper in 2010. Schilens received no less than 4 targets per game once he returned to the lineup in week 10, after being out with a foot injury, and he was able to post 29 catches for 365 yards in that timeframe. I like him to post at least 50 catches and should be a quality reserve/starter for bye weeks or injuries.
5. Davone Bess, WR, Miami Dolphins - Bess should be thankful to see Brandon Marshall in Miami and should be a nice complimentary WR Marshall. Defenses won’t be able to double him or key on him and should quite productive as their slot receiver. I do believe he’ll be able to build on his 2009 campaign and let’s hope more scores are in his future, as his 2 last season won’t cut it. Also, with the emergence of Chad Henne and an already established chemistry, things are looking for Bess in 2010. I like Bess to reel in 70 receptions and build on his scores to 6 this season.
Some other 3rd year WRs to target: Eddie Royal, Mario Manningham, Malcolm Kelly, Donnie Avery and Josh Morgan.
